Message we didn't buy 96's years ago have changed a lot. Mainly there are now upgraded ECU chips and plenty of mods available for a '96. The horsepower difference is a myth. There is more AUC (area under the curve) on a dyno sheet on earlier Z's with the VTC, since the VTC shifts the power curve the right at higher RPMs, but the peak horsepower is the same. The OBD II difference is for real, though.
